You might think the hair dyes lining the shelves of your local Clicks are the same as professional in-salon formulas. The truth is there are some major differences between the two.

So how is box dye different from salon dye?

Box dyes are pre-made formulas. They are made for ALL hair types, while salon hair colour is custom made for each client.

This means that it will be extremely hard, if not impossible, to achieve an even application with box dye.

Unlike getting your hair coloured by a professional, box dye is a one size fits all colour. It doesn’t take into consideration virgin hair, the previous colour(s) used, regrowth or grey coverage. This means you’ll probably be left with dark spots, glowing roots and unwanted tones.

Box dyes contain a set amount of chemicals that may be too harsh for certain hair types. This can lead to damaged, overpigmented, or overprocessed hair.

Many box dye formulas also contain ammonia, a chemical that can damage strands and cause them to become dry and brittle.

Professional hair colour formulas are often made without ammonia to ensure that the hair isn’t damaged during the colouring process. Even if your professional colourist uses a formula made with ammonia, they have the knowledge necessary to help mitigate any damage.

Are salon hair dyes better?

Simply put, when it comes to salon colour vs. box dye, it’s always best to get your hair coloured at the salon by a professional.

Salon formulas are better for your hair, and having a pro colourist apply it also ensures the best results.

When you consistently receive professional hair colour, someone’s carefully formulating the shade to do the least amount of damage possible and regularly examining your strands to ensure they remain healthy.

When you decide to go blonde, or black, that same stylist figures out the best way to lift the previous colour or transition you to the new shade while doing the least amount of damage to the hair.

In-salon colour treatments are more pricey than box dye, yes. But if you want a fantastic, bespoke result, you need a professional.
