With so many wonderful hair oils on the market today, it can be quite a daunting task trying to decide which hair oil is right for you. Not only are there hundreds of different hair oil products out there but you can even find some beautiful oils in your kitchen; like Olive Oil for example. So which one is best?
We’ve put together a quick list of things to consider before purchasing your next hair oil, below:
Your Hair Goals/Needs
It might be tempting to reach for whatever oil is trending at the moment, but it’s more important to consider what nutrients your hair needs and what exactly you are trying to achieve.
For example, if you’re striving for thicker, shinier hair, olive oil could be one of your best options due to its rich, protective nature. However, if you’re a bleached blonde, or even a natural one at that, and looking to maintain both your hair’s integrity and colour, then a hair oil product that specialises in just that would be the better option for you.
Your Hair’s Porosity
Don’t just rely on texture alone to make your hair choices—porosity plays a major factor too. For low porosity hair, lightweight oils that easily penetrate the cuticle are best (think grapeseed, almond, and jojoba oil). For high porosity hair, heavier oils that reduce frizz (like coconut oil, olive oil, and castor oil) are ideal.
Essentially, hair porosity is about your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture. The porosity of your hair affects how well oils and moisture pass in and out of the outermost layer of your hair, known as the cuticle.
How You Style Your Hair
Will you be wearing your hair straight, curly, or in a protective style? Your hair will need different types of oil in each of these states. For straight styles, heat protectant should be your #1 priority to protect the integrity of your hair. For curly styles, focus on fighting the frizz and keeping your ends hydrated. Protective styles? It’s all about the scalp! Keep a different oil on hand for each choice.
